A SYNAGOGUE in Borehamwood has set down its plans for Mitzvah day, a Jewish-led initiative that encourages people of all faiths to donate their time to charity.

The Borehamwood and Elstree United Synagogue, in Croxdale Road, is organising a range of activities that are “cross-generational” and “cross-communal”.

It has joined forces with other synagogues, schools, and nurseries to serve the Hertsmere community on Sunday 21 November, by doing good deeds and fundraising.

Among the activities planned are collecting gifts for children at Barnet Hospital, honouring the armed forces by making and sending them cards, and encouraging shoppers at Tesco, in Shenley Road, to buy items from the supermarket and then donate them to charity.

The Borehamwood and Elstree Times will also be getting involved, offering charities and organisations the chance to win a team of willing volunteers for Mitzvah Day, on Sunday, November 21.

Last year, a team from the Times Series newsroom rejuvenated the run-down garden of Oak Lodge School, in East Finchley, which caters for youngsters with special needs.

Now the team are readying themselves once more to lend a helping hand to a worthy cause in the community.

Any group, charity or organisation is eligible to enter and any task will be considered for Mitzvah Day.

Perhaps you know of a community centre that needs redecorating or allotments and green spaces that need clearing? Or maybe you would like the volunteers to visit special needs children or entertain elderly residents in a care home?

Simply submit your idea by emailing assistant editor Francine Wolfisz at fwolfisz@london.newsquest.co.uk or calling 0208 359 5921.

The closing date for entries is Friday, November 5.
