ENFIELD police are investigating a series of incidents involving the reckless use of air guns.

In an extraordinary series of attacks this weekend, two people were left with air gun pellets lodged in their bodies and three others suffered minor injuries in random sniper shots made across the borough.

On Friday in Green Lanes, a 38-year-old woman was shot by an air weapon as she waited at a bus stop at around 1am. Five minutes later, a 34-year-old woman was shot in the back of the leg and half-an-hour later a 34-year old man was shot in the chest in similar fashion on the same road.

On Saturday, just after midnight, a 19-year-old woman was shot in Green Lanes. The bullet lodged in the back of her leg. Later that day, in Edmonton Green shopping centre, a 16-year-old girl was hit in the cheek by an air pellet at 6.30pm.

Finally, in the early hours of Saturday morning a man in his late 50s was shot at in Enfield Town.

Owning an air weapon is not illegal for people over the age of 14 but they can be very dangerous and can cause serious injury.

Jamil Ahmed, who owns the Curry Queen restaurant on Main Avenue, Bush Hill Park, was a victim of air gun crime last month.

He said: "Nothing like this has happened to me before. I closed the restaurant on Monday night and when I returned on Tuesday morning the window had been damaged with an air gun causing more than £600 worth of damage.

He also said he had heard of similar incidents in Main Avenue and London Road in recent months.

A police spokesman said they were actively investigating the incidents but were keen to stress no connection between them had been established.

Police are appealing for anyone with information on the recent incidents, or any others involving air guns, to call the crimedesk on 8345 4441 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Two men have been arrested in connection with one of the incidents. They have both been charged with malicious wounding and possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence. They appeared at Enfield Magistrates Court on Monday.
