SCOUTS from Southgate joined a group of 100 of their peers to transform Downing Street into an adventure park last week.

The adventure park was set-up outside Number 10 last Tuesday to celebrate 100 years of Scouting, showcasing some of the exciting activities scouts get up to in the 21st century.

Along with a skate park, trampoline and street campsite, there was a climbing wall outside the home of the Prime Minister, with two Scouts fresh back from a climbing expedition to Everest on hand with advice Tony Blair, who steps down from the top job today, joined the Scouts outside his front door where he was quizzed on youth issues.

He said: "I was delighted to welcome so many Scouts to Downing Street - and see just some of the exciting activities which are now part of modern scouting.

"It was clear, talking to the youngsters, that Scouting, as well as being great fun, also helps teach values vital to the strength and health of our societies."

Events and activities have been running nationally throughout the year celebrating the Centenary of Scouting. The celebrations culminate in a World Scout Jamboree expected to attract around 40,000 scouts to Hylands Park in Essex.

Jenny Brooker, assistant Cub Scout leader at the 6th Southgate Cub Pack, said: "Many people ask why I volunteer to help young people when I have such a busy job. Days like this, when I see young people having fun, challenging themselves and learning new skills answer that question emphatically."
