Driver who nearly hit a baby calls for Enfield Borough Council to move 'dangerous' bin

A driver who nearly ran over a baby has hit out at Enfield Borough Council for placing a bin in a “dangerous” place.

Jeff Best, of Mayfair Terrace in Southgate, was driving through Windmill Hill to Enfield Town earlier this week when he spotted a man standing behind a bin at a zebra crossing.

The 72-year-old assumed he was waiting for a friend so continued driving.

However, he was “horrified” to see the pedestrian was pushing a baby in a pram, which Mr Best claims was entirely obscured by the bin.

The man raised his fist in anger at Mr Best for not stopping at the crossing but he is now on a mission to get the council to move the dangerous bin. 

The grandfather-of-four said: “I can’t believe the stupidity. Someone one day is going to get killed. It could happen in a few years or in five minutes.

"The bin is in a dangerous place, it is on a blind spot and the drivers coming down the hill can’t see the pedestrians."

Mr Best, who is a freelance pattern cutter as well as a professional toast maker at weddings, regularly visits The Town to do his shopping and believes the bin has only been installed in the last couple of months.

The pensioner, who has lived in the borough for 49 years, said: “Maybe I am the only one who has noticed it but I doubt it.

"People may have just thought it is stupid and then go about their business and forget all about it.”

He said he was not speeding and he claims even drivers who travel at 20 miles per hour would encounter difficulties caused by the poorly placed bin.
