Rotarians inspired by Paralympians to start competition

More than 80 people are expected to take part in a Paralympic-style competition today.

The Rotary Club of Southgate is working with rotary clubs throughout north London to organise their first North London DisAbility Games at the Aspire National Training Centre in Stanmore.

President of the Southgate group said: "Like most projects in rotary this was started by one rotarian, in this case a member of the Rotary Club of Barnet.

"He took inspiration from the Paralympic Games, which were founded by the late Rotarian Sir Ludwig Guttman and wanted to give disabled members of our community the chance to take part in a sporting activity."

Participants will compete in sports including Boccia, table tennis, darts, weight lifting, wheelchair slalom and new age kurling.
