Paranormal team called to the King and Tinker pub to find spirit of former landlord

A landlady is convinced her pub is haunted by its former landlord.

Toni Duke and her husband Barry took on the King and Tinker pub, in Whitewebbs Lane, between Crews Hill and Bulls Cross, in December last year.

The pub’s previous landlord, who took it over in 2004, died of a heart attack when he was in his 60s in an upstairs bedroom approximately six years ago.

Mr and Mrs Duke say they experienced strange goings-on as soon as they moved into the 300-year-old building.

All the staff encountered black shadows roaming throughout the pub during the day and night, although they say the visions appear and vanish so quickly their shape is indistinguishable.

Paintings also fell from the restaurant’s walls without reason. Mrs Duke said when one picture fell, it was replaced, only for another to hit the ground.

Mrs Duke, 47, who describes herself as a “believer and a non-believer,” called in the North London Paranormal Investigation squad, which investigates supernatural activity, to see if any light could be shed on the matter.

Chief paranormal investigator Mickey Gocool and his team carried out an overnight vigil at the pub in April.

Mr Gocool, 46, from Lordship Lane in Wood Green, said: “The first thing I felt was an energy that had recently passed and that there was a man in the upstairs bedroom.

“I felt a presence of a man who had a chest pain, like a heart attack. I described my feeling to the landlord and he said we had just described Paul.”

He said it felt as if the landlord was looking out of the window waiting for a delivery.

He said it is hard to tell if the spirit is happy, and feels he remains extremely attached to the pub.

Mrs Duke, who will not visit the public toilet in her pub alone at night for fear of supernatural activity, is convinced the paranormal investigators are on the ball about the haunting.

She believes the spirit is “definitely” him because a customer asked it through a Ouija board if it liked sausages – the former landlord's favourite food – and it said yes.

Only last week, all of the saucepans in the kitchen fell from their shelves, and as soon as they were put back, they fell once more.

A member of staff is also adamant she plugged in a vacuum cleaner, but as she went to turn it on, she realised the plug had been removed from its socket.

Mrs Duke said: “It doesn’t happen often but there is obvious activity here, although we don’t always see it. It is usually little bits and pieces and you get used to it.

“Why did all these saucepans all fall off the shelves? There was no reason why they all fell. The chef went up to pick them up and they all fell again.”

According to North London Paranormal Investigations, this pub was visited by their organisation 1 April 2012! If the "haunting" is so obvious, why has it taken until now for the story to become public? A little bit of clever marketing perhaps...?

This story would bring in more customers than turn them away. There are a group (maybe thousands) who will travel around and visit pubs and buildings rumoured to be haunted. Clever marketing

If I may shed some light on why it's taken so long...

We did indeed conduct our first investigation in April and will continue to investigate the location until we have obtained all the evidence we require. The location gave satisfactory results with every experiment we conducted.

Our Investigations are ongoing. The pub has direct connections to Guy Fawkes and King James the 1st.
There is some suggestion in the structure of the pub to suggest further investigation is required in order for our team to uncover it's secrets.

All the research we do and the evidence we analyse is a time consuming process. Only now we feel we have made progress. So this may account for the delay but as I said, The Investigation is ongoing and any prior public knowledge of our attendance would indeed bring "Ghost Hunters" and other curious types to the pub and potentially contaminate any potential evidence.

The press were unaware until now.

This is true, I have had an experience in The King And Tinker, i didn't like it, made me feel very weird, still go in for a drink, it's a very old pub, to be expected just didn't feel great at the time

We would be interested to hear your experience if you are willing Miffy64

We have investigated quite a few pubs but The King & Tinker is Unique. It's at an odd angle to the main road. ~This is due to the fact that there was a road outside the pub where the car park is now and prior to the construction of whitewebbs lane. The road would have passed through Whitewebbs park towards the rose and crown! We also believe that this may be the scene of a conspiracy involving a former King of England. The pub has a connection to Guy Fawkes. Whitewebbs house was originally located opposite the pub. The house has long gone and is now Guys lodge farm. A second Whitewebbs house was built nearby and was once a nursing home! Today it is the Toby carvery.

Maybe you would like to join us when we do re-visit The King and Tinker?

Best wishes.

i would like to say a few words as i have worked in the tinker on and off since the age of 13 i am now 24, i knew Paul the spirit you speak of. ( i have often scenced a prescence of someone or something in all areas of the pub) but paul was a practical joker was for ever playing tricks on his staff when he was alive, i believe that he is still doing the same now! i believe hat there is no harm ment he is just doing what he has always done. Strange things used to happen often but to be honest nothing dangerous has ever happen (like the saucepans falling off the shelf. i dont quite believe that) i could list hundreds of things that have happened in that pub!!! We also used to have ghostly activity even before paul died there so i think that there are many spirits trapped in the king and tinker!!! thanks Hannah x
