Enfield poetry competition launched

People are being called to take part in two poetry contests to find borough’s best wordsmith.

The Enfield Young People’s Poetry Competition 2012 and The Enfield Mayor’s Poetry Award were launched last week by Enfield Council to celebrate National Poetry Day.

The theme for this year’s competitions is the 400 year history of the New River, which was built to provide fresh water to London and connects Enfield to the centre of the capital.

Poet and Enfield resident Mario Petrucci will be the adjudicator for the third year and will be joined by local poets and Enfield Council’s Cultural Services team on the judging panel.

The Enfield Young People’s Poetry Competition is for children up to the age of 18 and includes three categories, with Monday, December 17 the deadline for entries.

One category is the best poem entered by a community group, school, or school class with the winner getting £500.

The Enfield Mayor’s Poetry Award is open to anyone above the age of 18 with a possible prize of £500 for the first prize, with a deadline of Friday December 21.
