A hoax bomb threat caused today’s mass evacuation from the Civic Centre, Enfield Council has confirmed.
The centre in Silver Street was evacuated after a telephone call suggested a suspicious package was inside.
Hundreds of people – including politicians, staff and members of the public were evacuated while police carried out a full search.
A statement, issued by Enfield Council, said: "Following a thorough search of the building during which no suspicious packages were found, staff, members of the public and politicians were allowed back into the building at 12.50pm.
"While the council regrets any disruption that may have been caused to visitors to the Civic Centre, the safety and security of members of the public and staff is its main priority and we have a duty to protect life and limb from any and all threats we receive.
"We would urge anyone who has any information regarding the perpetrator of this hoax call to contact the police."
Police guarded the entrance to the Civic Centre while people waited to be let inside.
