A mother-of-two is egg-static after discovering a perfectly round chicken egg in her box of 12.

Cassie Greenhill, of Farndale Avenue, in Winchmore Hill, made the bizarre discovery when she returned home from a shopping trip to Asda in Southgate last week.

The 32-year-old, who is lactose intolerant and allergic to eggs, was ready to make her 14-year-old son Harry an omelette when she spotted the rare egg.

She nearly cracked the spherical specimen as it looked similar to the others when it was packed in the box, but stopped herself in the nick of time.

She said: “I had never seen anything like that and my partner Lee just wasn’t interested.

“He said it was nothing but I thought I’d just check online and see if it was common. It was a chef that found one a few years ago and it made me realise how rare it was.”

The last recorded round chicken egg was unearthed in 2010, when shell-shocked chef James Church made the cracking find while working in a Cornwall hotel.

Ms Greenhill, who is a PA at Highfield Primary school, has become very protective of her egg-straordinary find.

She warned her son Harry to leave her egg alone and also told her bodybuilding brother – who eats up to 12 eggs a day - that he can eat anything in the kitchen apart from her prized egg.

She said: “I feel like a mother hen protecting my egg, if anyone had eaten the egg I wouldn’t have been very happy.”

Resident egg-spert Alan Johnson ran CA Johnson farm in The Ridgeway for 50 years. He said he has never heard of a round egg, and said Ms Greenhill’s find must be extremely rare.

He said: “You do get some unusual shaped eggs from time to time – some pointed and others are different sized but I have never heard of a round egg.”

Ms Greenhill is considering what the future holds for her find. She said she may drain the egg of its fluid and decorate its shell or she may even submit it to a charity raffle.

Unfortunately, the mother-of-two said her find has made her the butt of many of her friends’ jokes.

However, she said: “If I can’t join them, I’m just going to have to beat them!”
