Disabled woman determined to complete triathlon despite soaring heat

A disabled woman is determined to complete a charity triathlon on Sunday despite temperatures soaring to 29 degrees.

Anne Taylor, 54, who lives in Broomfield Avenue, Palmers Green, will ride 5km in a sports wheelchair and swim 400 metres through Crystal Palace.

Begona Mendez, who works for Ms Taylor's chosen charity, Leonard Cheshire Disability, will cycle 15km and Robert Hambrook, who also works for Leonard Cheshire Disability, will run 5km alongside Ms Taylor, who will be in her wheelchair.

She said: “It is going to be really hot on Sunday which doesn’t help matters – I am going to be pushing a wheelchair five km in that heat. I am going to buy a sun hat tomorrow and two lots of sun cream.

“I am going to be pushing a wheelchair which is going to be harder than running but they are going to fill up my water all the time.”

Temperatures are expected to hit 29 degrees on Sunday, the hottest day of the week.

She hopes to raise at least £200 for the charity, which provides care and support for thousands of people in the UK with disabilities.

Ms Taylor, who started training in April for her challenge, has raised just over £100 so far, but hopes to double her target by the weekend.

Any money raised will serve as a thank you to the service after she spent nine years living in Arnold House in The Ridgeway, which is a care home run by the charity.

She told the Enfield Independent two weeks ago that she has been inspired by Paralympians to push herself to the limit and raise as much money as possible for the good cause.
