A LIBRARY built in the centre of Enfield last year has been shortlisted for an architecture award.

Enfield Town Library in Church Street has been nominated for Civic Building of the Year at the SCALA awards – which celebrate construction in the public sector.

The library was reopened in March 2010 by former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion after 18 months of work on the 100-year-old building.

The building – which now includes a two-storey extension and a renewable energy ground source heating system – also won a London Planning Award from Mayor Boris Johnson in January.

John Moore, director of Mulalley, the construction firm that built the library, said: “We are pleased the library has been shortlisted for this award.

“This is a very attractive building and the new work has attracted lots of visitors. It is great to see it being used by so many people from the local community.”
