THE principal of an academy in Enfield which opened two years ago has praised “inspirational” students after they received their GCSE results.

Lynne Dawes heralded the achievements of the 16-year-olds at Oasis Academy Hadley who picked up their results this morning.

She said: “This has been a truly inspirational year. As well as the many high achieving students there are many stories of potential underachievers, achieving high standards despite facing some challenging circumstances.

“The amount of work from students and staff has been quite incredible, and the support from parents and carers and the wider Academy community have been invaluable.”

47 per cent of students achieved 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths – up 20 per cent from last year – and the number of pupils getting 5 A*-C grades jumped from 46 per cent to 84 per cent.

Ms Dawes picked out high achieving pupils like Edris Khorani, who got 9A*s and 2As, and Vanessa Kavuma, who got 5A*s and 5As, as well as pupils like Aylin Mehmedali, who moved to the UK from Bulgaria two years ago, and overcame language difficulties to notch up 5A*s, 3As, and 2Bs.

The principal added: “I would like to congratulate every person who has played their part in making this Academy a success.

“We realise that there is a lot more work to do, but we now have wonderful foundations to go on and be one of the best schools in the area.”
