Pet cat dies in Edmonton after 'horrific' dog attack

POLICE are looking for witnesses after a beloved pet cat was mauled to death by two dogs in a “horrific” attack.

Tabatha the cat was wrenched from her horrfied owner's lap by two loose dogs and savaged, in Laburnum Avenue, Edmonton. It later died from its injuries.

The owner, a 76-year-old woman who did not want to be named, said: “"She was the last link to my late husband. I will never ever get over that scene.

“They pulled and pulled her apart and I will never forget this to my dying day. I couldn’t save her, I couldn’t do anything.”

Police investigating have seized two dogs – believed to be a Japanese Akita-crossed with another breed, and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier-cross – following the attack on Friday, August 19, at around 2.30pm.

The Japanese Akita is one of four breeds deemed illegal under current dangerous dog legislation which the Enfield Independent is campaigning to be strengthened.

Detective Sergeant Chris Kirk, who is investigating, released details of the attack to try to encourage witnesses to come forward.

He said: “This was a particularly horrific incident for the victim to witness which has left her traumatised.

“I am keen to speak to anyone with information about this incident."

Officers arrested two boys, aged 16 and 17, and a 19-year-old man in connection with the attack on suspicion of dangerous dog crimes and offences against the person. They have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Anyone with information can call DS Kirk on 0208 345 3342 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

The Akita is not a banned breed. You should do your research before saying stuff like that or you risk damaging your own campaign to stregthen dog laws. The Japanese Tosa is what you are thinking of and that is a completely different dog.

Either way, it is not the breed of dog that is the problem, its the idiots that train them. You can train a Labrador to be a vicious killer just as easily as you can train a rotweiler to be a lovely friendly dog. (I have known both examples) The people that turn lovely animals into violent beasts should be imprisoned as they (the humans) are clearly a danger to society and not right in the head. The four real banned breeds are banned because they are not as simple to train and can go haywire irrespective of their training.

If you banned a breed every time you had a limited number of examples of dangerous behaviour you would end up with all dogs banned. If you however introduce common sense to dog-laws indicating that an animal can be deemed dangerous irrespective of breed then you reach a much more useful position allowing police to enforce dog laws on irresponsible owners of any dog, labrador, akita, rotweiler or Japanese Tosa/pitbull etc.

What an idiot! Maybe you should actually try reading the Dangerous Dogs Act Mr Kirk! Japanese Akita's are not, nor have they EVER been banned under the DDA. It is exactly that kind of ill researched rubbish that causes hysteria among the public. I think an apology might be in order, but i doubt very much you will have the grace to do so.
