A CHARITY worker from Enfield is helping with the construction and repair of damage wreaked by the earthquake in Haiti.
Rita McIntyre, 30, leaves her home in Oakwood for Haiti tomorrow. As a shelter advisor for Medair she will give technical guidance on repairing and constructing homes for two years.
Six months after the 7.0 magnitude Haitian earthquake, 80 per cent of Haiti’s population lives on two US dollars or less a day and rubble still has not been cleared off the streets, say aid workers.
Rits said: “It’s often overlooked that Haiti still needs help.
“The situation was bad before the earthquake. They are so used to being poor. The country doesn’t suddenly recover.”
Donations to Medair go directly towards building new homes and 3,500 have been built so far.
Rita added: “Financially, it’s not rewarding, but I feel better spending the money on going to Haiti rather than shopping.
“I wanted to do something for myself. It is more satisfying than the corporate world.”
