SCOUTS from Enfield arrived in Sweden this morning for a world meeting with thousands of others.

A group of 24 have joined nearly 40,000 others from across the world as part of North London's contingent to the World Scout Jamboree in the city of Kristianstad.

The two-week festival features hundreds of activities centred around the natural environment.

Amongst the Enfield scouts is Izzy Way, who will be the youngest at the Jamboree, celebrating her fourteenth birthday on the day of the opening ceremony.

Teenager Elizabeth Broderick, from the Hatters Explorer Unit in Southgate, said: “I feel so lucky and privileged to be chosen to attend the largest gathering of the youth of the world.

“I’m going to learn so much about other cultures and countries in such a short time.”

The jamboree is held every four years and this event is the 22nd since Robert Baden-Powell was declared Chief Scout at the first meeting in Kensington in 1920.

An adult volunteer, Explorer Scout Leader Andy Heath from Bush Hill Park, said: “Volunteering to be a camp warden for two weeks is not everyone’s idea of a summer holiday, but I know throughout the jamboree whether working as a cleaner and organiser, or participating in events I will be having a ball – sharing experiences with people from all over the world and that in some small way will contribute to a greater international understanding.”
