SCOUTS from a group in Southgate are heading to Africa next month in a project to plant an orange grove and help with conservation.

The expedition of 28 children and leaders, from the Hatters Explorer Unit in Knoll Drive, will fly to Namibia after spending nearly a year raising money for the trip.

They will plant a grove of 400 orange and mango trees in the village of Tsintabis to create a sustainable income for the disadvantaged community, and work on white rhino conservation projects in the Etosha National Park.

Scout leader Stephen Ward said: “This trip will not only be an amazing opportunity for the Explorer Scouts, but we hope it will also make a difference to the lives of the Namibians.

“After only 21 years of independence there is a huge gap between black and white people and rich and poor.”

The group have held a variety of fundraising events during the past year – from quiz nights and cake sales to a sponsored leg-waxing for the boys.
