A MAN found with a loaded shotgun in Wood Green's shopping district has been jailed for six years this morning.

Joshua Kurt Munnings, 22, of Godolphin Close, Enfield, gave the game away by swiftly turning on his heel when he spotted Haringey police officers knowing he was holding the dangerous firearm in a carrier bag.

The suspicious officers decided to carry out a stop and search at which point Munnings ran off and tossed the bag into a fast food restaurant in Ashleigh Crescent.

Officers continued to chase Munnings and he was caught and arrested in Pelham Road after the discarded bag was searched to reveal the weapon.

Investigating officer DC Ben Jefferd, of Tottenham crime squad, said: "Patrolling officers spotted Munning's suspicious behaviour and intended to stop and search him when he made off. Their brave actions proved crucial in detaining Munnings.

"Guns kill and terrorise and as a result of the use of stop and search and a thorough investigation, a deadly firearm has been removed from our streets. Munnings now faces a considerable term in jail."

CCTV footage was played at Harrow Crown Court showing Munnings running from police holding the bag and throwing it away.

Forensic analysis also proved Munnings' fingerprints matched those on the bag.

Munnings appeared at Harrow Crown Court today and received a six-year sentence for possession of a loaded weapon in public following the incident on November 17 last year after being found guilty by a jury.

This was the second time the case was heard as a previous trial returned a hung jury.

Haringey Detective Superintendent Paul Hoare praised his officers for their handling of the case and heralded the conviction as a victory for controversial stop and search powers.

He said: "This case demonstrates very clearly the importance of stop and search and the dangers that officers face on a daily basis as they strive to protect the public. We should never underestimate their commitment or bravery."
