500 children spring into shape at trampolining festival

FIVE hundred children will be leaping into action next week at a four-day gymnastics and trampolining festival.

The youngsters from 52 Enfield schools, aged between five and 18, have been busy honing their sequences over the past few weeks in the hope of gaining a place on the podium.

The annual competition, held at two Enfield leisure centres, has been made harder this year to provide greater challenges for club performers.

Jan Hickman, Enfield sports development manager, said: “We have an abundance of talent to unleash at this great competitive event. Each year the standard of gymnastics improves.

“Competition categories are more difficult so that those gymnasts performing at club level can be challenged, but we shall see some really innovative routines stretching all our young people both physically and intellectually.”

Alongside the competitors, members of the Elite Gymnastics Club, based at Edmonton Leisure Centre, will perform a rhythmic gymnastics display.

An army of sports leaders will act as the judges at the event.

Councillor Jon Kaye, cabinet member for leisure, culture and Olympics, said: “This is an impressive event that gives our children of all ages and abilities the chance to shine.

"It is a great competition and part of our big push to get everybody active. I am looking forward to it.”

Southgate MP David Burrowes, Councillor Glynis Vince, cabinet member for education, children’s services and youth, and Mayor of Enfield Eleftherios Savva will all present trophies to the winning teams.

Winners of the two open gym competitions will receive individual trophies. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded for individual trampolining events, alongside an overall team trophy.

The gymnastics-only events will take place at Southbury Leisure Centre, in Southbury Road, on November 30 and December 1, from 9am to 3pm.

Both trampolining and gymnastics events will take place at Edmonton Leisure Centre, in Edmonton Green, on December 2, from 9am to 3pm, and December 3, from 9am to 1pm.
