Power went down just after 2pm.
Postcode areas affected are N15, N22, N21, N13, EN1, EN4, N18, N14, N3, N4, N8, N18, N10 and N11.
Surrounding areas have also been affected.
Fire crews were called to Wood Green Library in High Road, Wood Green, just after 2pm.
Workers in the building suspected nearby construction and wiring work may have caused the problem.
The firefighters found no danger in the building.
Electricity provider EDF Energy said there was a fault at the Palmers Wood sub-station.
“Our engineers are working to repair the fault as soon as possible,” the company said in a statement.
In the meantime it is appealing for information about how the fault may have been caused.
