PRIMARY school children are being bowled over by a new game.

Normally a pastime associated with pensioners, bowls has a new following – groups of nine and ten year-olds.

Members of the Arnos Bowling Club and Selbourne Bowling Club have been coaching the children in the finer points of the game.

Now they have acquired enough skills to compete and children from St Monicas and Our Lady of Lourdes will be going head to head on Thursday in an inter-school bowls competition at Arnos Park in Waterfall Road, New Southgate.

Club chairman, Les Cohen, said: “It is surprising how many children enjoy the game and there really is no reason why it should be confined to older generations.

“The children are very keen to take part in the competition. They have learned how to aim and how to judge on the best strategies to play well.”

Enfield’s mayor, Cllr Eleftherios Savva, will be at the park to see this first bowls competition in Enfield between teams of a much younger generation.
