STUDENTS across Enfield are celebrating as GCSE pass rates in the borough continue to rise.
Provisional figures show that the proportion of students getting five GCSEs at grade C or above has increased for the fourth year in succession to 58.9 per cent.
That is a 2.7 per cent increase on last year’s mark, while the proportion of students getting a set of five passes that includes the key subjects of English and maths has risen to 49 per cent.
Enfield cabinet member for children’s services Glynis Vince said: “I am delighted that for the fourth straight year our results have improved.
“This shows a real commitment to the high standards we expect from our schools. The students and staff should be very proud of themselves.”
Despite the improvement, the council looks set to miss its target of 60 per cent of pupils receiving five A* to C results, and 50 per cent of pupils scoring five A* to C including English and maths.
However, the local authority remains hopeful that when the final figures are totted up they will have passed their test.
Director of education, children’s services and leisure Peter Lewis said: “This is a wonderful example of how the young people of Enfield can achieve in national examinations. This is an exceptional result.
“We will continue our commitment to working in partnership with schools to find new ways to raise achievement and to increase the pace at which young people are improving.”
The final results will be published next January in the Achievement and Attainment Tables.
