A long-serving councillor has been appointed mayor of Haringey for the third time.

Cllr Gina Adamou, who has been a councillor for 28 years and represents the Harringay ward, was sworn in at the council’s annual general meeting last night (May 24).

Originally from Cyprus, Cllr Adamou came to the UK in 1960, living in Islington and Camden before moving to Haringey.

She said: “I will do my best to represent the borough. As my son reminded me last night, we have lived in all three Haringey constituencies.

“I am very proud to represent this wonderful borough of ours.”

Cllr Adamou’s nominated charities are the John Dewey Specialist College, which provides education and training for young adults with learning disabilities, and Ambitious about Autism, which supports those with autism and works to raise awareness of the condition.

Cllr Adamou’s son Andreas and granddaughter Miriam will be her consorts.

Northumberland Park councillor Sheila Peacock was confirmed as deputy mayor.

Cllr Adamou took the chains of office from Cllr Stephen Mann, who raised £17,000 for his chosen charities Studio 306 and Mind in Haringey during his year in office.

He said it had been an “honour and a privilege” to serve the borough.
