Council leaders and mayors will be officially appointed in Enfield and Haringey this week as the local authorities hold their first meetings since the elections on May 3.

Enfield is likely to see the election of Jubilee ward councillor Nesil Caliskan as new council leader, who, at only 29, will become the youngest head of any local authority in London.

She narrowly won a leadership contest on May 14 to oust long-standing Labour leader Cllr Doug Taylor.

After her election, Cllr Caliskan pledged to tackle the rise in serious crime and take action on the borough’s housing crisis.

Meanwhile, Bruce Grove councillor Joseph Ejiofor will become leader of Haringey Council as the administration moves in a more left-wing direction following the departure of former head Claire Kober.

His deputy is expected to be Noel Park ward councillor Emine Ibrahim.

The Labour group has revealed plans to ditch the Haringey Development Vehicle and in-source services as part of a “new model for local government”.

Cabinet members will be appointed in both boroughs, and mayors and deputy mayors will also be elected.

Enfield Council will meet at the Civic Centre at 7pm on Wednesday, May 23.

Haringey Council will meet at Alexandra Palace at 7.30pm on Thursday, May 24.
