A team of police officers who work to reduce crime and to engage with the people of Tottenham Green has been nominated for an award for excellence.

Sergeant Hassan, Police Constable Taylor, Police Constable Rafiq and Police Community Support Officer Wyke could be crowned Safer Neighbourhoods Team of the Year at the Met Excellence Awards if enough members of the public vote for them.

The four have forged links with the community through social media, community events and neighbourhood watch schemes.

These have helped with intelligence gathering and weapons sweeps.

The team has carried out 15 warrants, made 124 arrests and patrolled areas known for knife crime and robberies leading to 180 stop and searches.

They have also worked with Haringey Council to tackle anti-social behaviour, to clean up parks and to install a public gym.

Inspector Jonathan Waterfield, the team’s nominating officer, said: “The team are unrelenting in their fight against crime and their desire to protect the vulnerable.

“Their drive to work with partners and other agencies has improved the local environment for all residents and helps put the Met in the heart of the community.”

Robert How, chairman of Tottenham Green Ward Safer Neighbourhoods Team panel, added: “As chair of Tottenham Green Ward Panel, I have nothing but praise and gratitude for the team led by Sergeant Hassan and therefore I have no hesitation in supporting this nomination.

“Their approachability, their professionalism and their resourcefulness have helped to get the police back on track in regaining trust and confidence in an area of London which has its fair share of issues.

“I am very aware of the inroads that have been made by Sergeant Hassan’s team in helping to raise safety and security awareness in the community.

“I feel that the team are a fine example of how well our police force are maintaining and developing an effective and beneficial relationship with the Tottenham Green community.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the team in helping to raise awareness of policing and to continue to focus on the policing priorities and promises that will help to prevent – and thus reduce – crime in our ward.”
