Students performed a play to highlight the role social media has in relationships on a day when awareness about domestic violence was raised.

Year 11 pupils from Heron Hall Academy took part in a conference about the early warning-signs of unhealthy relationships and the different forms abuse can take on Thursday November 23.

Enfield Council, the Metropolitan Police, and health groups joined the 15-to-16-year-old pupils at the Dugdale Centre-based event where discussions on a two-year plan addressing domestic violence were held.

The Council re-affirmed its White Ribbon Pledge to empower women and girls to resist domestic violence and abuse.

Charity Tender Education & Arts organised the conference and a workshop ahead of White Ribbon Day which was on Saturday November 25.

Cllr Krystle Fonyonga, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for community safety and public health, collected an award from White Ribbon UK on behalf of the Council for work done on ending domestic abuse.

Cllr Fonyonga, said: “Enfield Council is proud to have signed up to the White Ribbon pledge to never excuse, commit or remain silent about male violence against women.

“There is no place in a civilised society for a cowardly and abhorrent crime such as this.

“We will continue to work with our partner organisations to bring those responsible for committing violence to justice and to help protect domestic violence survivors.”

Enfield Council ran an abuse awareness campaign called ‘Boyfriend Material’ earlier in the year.

The aim of the campaign was to help women realise when they are in an unhealthy or abusive relationship.

The White Ribbon conference was the second stage of the Council’s domestic violence campaign.

Domestic violence is abuse used by someone to control or overpower their partner.

It can be physical, sexual, psychological, verbal, emotional and financial.

Arts charity Tender promotes healthy relationships based on equality and respect to prevent domestic abuse and sexual violence.

Enfield Council achieved White Ribbon status in 2010.
