A man who is still overcoming his own mental health problems is taking on a solo cycling challenge to raise cash for charity.

Shaun Wood is pedaling his way from Lands End to John O’Groats, in Scotland, to support Mind in Enfield.

Shaun set off on his intrepid journey on Monday August 14, having arrived at his starting point by train the previous day.

He expects his inspirational and determined fundraising effort to take him two weeks, arriving at John O’Groats on Saturday August 26.

Mind in Enfield is a charity close to Shaun’s heart.

He said: “Mental health is an issue that is massively misunderstood by the public, and has a profound impact on how people are able to socialize, motivate, or even perform the most basic of tasks.

“I have had my own battles with stress and motivation, as has my family.

“Cycling has been a thing that has really managed to change my mindset for the better.

“All the way down to my social skills and energy I bring into work.

“By setting challenges, even somewhat ridiculous goals, I surprise myself at achieving them.

“This year I will make it to John O’Groats. Next year, who knows?

“I cannot think of a more appropriate cause that Mind in Enfield, which does a lot of work on public awareness of the impact and experience of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues.

“The first step to solving a problem needs to be an acceptance of it.”
