Forty Hall Estate’s latest art exhibition comprises a mixture of textiles, printmaking and object making.

Multi-disciplinary fine artist Cos Ahmet latest display Points of Juncture is taken from the artist’s 2016 show Thread is Thought and two specially-commissioned pieces also draw inspiration from Forty Hall’s rich textile history.

The nature of Cos’ work is centred around the body. Some of his works are displayed as embodiments, in the form of casts of his body. Other times, there is an absence of the body, and is either implied or related to a specific space.

His artistic practice represents parts of a body making references to human activity and the human condition that are ever-present in the way he uses metaphors to shape his work, be it object based, two-dimensional or something in between.

The new works also take inspiration from Forty Hall’s building, and the success of its former owner, Sir Nicholas Rainton, who made his fortune trading textiles across Europe.

Cos studied Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University, specialising in woven tapestry. Now he combines tapestry with a range of disciplines in his practice that include works on paper, sculpture and object making. He has exhibited internationally, and received the Theo Moorman Award for Weavers in 2016.

He says his latest exhibition is inspired by metaphors that he believes represent the body and self.

He says: “My starting point for the new works was inspired by and references Forty Hall’s very existence – a place built upon a textile legacy.

“What emerged for me was a certain dialogue, a notion that the fabric, or material, had become the Hall’s symbol, forging itself a material identity It also presented its own metaphor, which draws parallels with how I see the processes in my own practice; where metaphors such as ‘thread as thought’ or ‘warp as the skeleton to represent the body, self and identity”

Hatice Abdullah, Forty Hall manager, added that the exhibition explores Forty Hall’s rich heritage.

He says: “Audiences responded well to last year’s craft exhibition What Do I Need to do to Make it OK? and Points of Juncture builds upon that ongoing interest in contemporary crafts, reflecting Forty Hall’s commitment to championing contemporary arts within a heritage setting.

“We hope that people will enjoy exploring the artworks in the period rooms and that their experience of the artworks adds value to their understanding of the Hall’s history.”
