A rapper who opened a novel ‘pop-up’ business is offering ambitious acts the opportunity to use her facilities for free.

Mary Otumahana, 27, who performs under the name WondRWomn, manages The RecordShop on a ground floor space in The Enterprise Centre, Tottenham High Road.

Through her pop-up she encourages artists to walk in off the street to record their music the very same day, whilst also giving opportunities to perform at showcase events she organises to gain experience.

Ms Otumahana had the idea when she realized her own passion for performing and recording music needed a more professional environment in order to thrive.

She said: “I had mainly created and recorded music from my bedroom, but I had reached a point where I wanted a more creative space where I could focus primarily on music making.

“While drafting up the idea, I realized this could be a platform for several other young artists, and I began to envision a place for emerging artists to socialize and make music.”

Ms Otumahana’s first move was to contact a company called somewhereto_, which used to provide free spaces for young people with a good business plan.

Ambitious Ms Otumahana, explained: “I love collaborating with organisations and companies in the community.

“We are currently working with Telephonica and Samsung on a project in Westfield, White City, but the ultimate goal is to build a recording studio for emerging artists, organise wider scale events and maximize the brand as much as possible.”

She is keen to pass on her experience and offers advice to budding entrepreneurs willingly.

She said: “The best advice I would give is to follow your dreams and never give up.

“The biggest hurdle I faced was setting up The RecordShop, but once the ball was rolling the results were overwhelming.

“I have gained so many rewards from setting up my own venture, and I truly believe that every ounce of effort is worthwhile and reap rewards.

“I encourage artists who come to The RecordShop to nurture their ideas, broaden their knowledge and stay persistent.”

The RecordShop is at the 639 Enterprise Centre, Tottenham High Road, N17 8AA, and more details can be found at www.therecshop.co.uk.
