Yet another site in the borough has been illegally occupied by travellers, with neighbours saying they have been left feeling “uneasy”.

The old site of Barnet and Southgate College is now home to six caravans after they moved in on Tuesday evening (September 27).

The land, in Wood Street, Barnet, was sold by the college to Enfield Council last July. The council say they are aware of the problem.

The council can seek a court order to remove the travellers, but it could take up to six weeks before they are evicted.

Guy Harrowell, who has lived opposite the college for 18 months, said he called the police and the council on Tuesday, but neither was able to stop the caravans going in.

He said: “It feels very uneasy. There are a lot of vans driving around, there is noise until late at night and windows have been smashed.

“I'm no snob, but this has really brought the tone of the area down.

“The council need to stop being so politically correct and forcefully remove them without the requirement of a court order. They have caused criminal damage.”

Enfield Council spokesperson Suzanne Linsey said: “We are aware there is an illegal encampment on this site and are taking the relevant steps to have it removed as soon as possible.”

The police have been contacted for comment.
