A group opposing proposed parliamentary boundary changes in Enfield was launched on Tuesday evening (September 27).

The Save Our Southgate (SOS) campaign, fronted by current Southgate MP David Burrowes, was launched at a meeting of community group and resident association representatives.

Earlier this month the Boundary Commission proposed changing parliamentary constituency boundaries and reducing the number of MPs from 650 to 600. The plans are subject to consultation over the next three months.

The commission has proposed scrapping both the Enfield Southgate and Enfield North seats.

Two new seats would take their place, one called Finchley and Southgate, the other simply Enfield.

The former would cover voters in Winchmore Hill, Southgate, and Southgate Green, as well as several Barnet wards.

People living in Cockfosters would be represented by a Chipping Barnet and Mill Hill MP, while those in Bowes would instead choose the Hornsey and Wood Green MP.

Those living in the Chase, Enfield Highway, Enfield Lock, Grange, Highlands, Southbury, Town and Turkey Street wards would be represented by the new Enfield seat.

Mr Burrowes described the proposals a "bad deal for Enfield" and has called on Enfield Council to oppose the plans.

He said "I am pleased to help launch SOS, which is also known as Operation Humpty because the aim is to put Enfield back together after the planned break-up of the constituency.

“It is primarily a community led campaign because it is in the best interests of Enfield to reject the plans and seek a revised plan."
