Commuters have backed the reintroduction of ticket offices to the London Underground as plans go to the public vote.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has asked for a review of changes at stations, particularly the closure of ticket offices, and the impact on customer service.

Oakwood station was one of those to have its ticket office closed up, and passengers travelling from there this morning (September 29), were keen for a return to personal customer service.

Brian Burkinshaw, who lives in Spain, said the machines had left him confused.

He said: “It’s rubbish, I’ve just turned up here for the first time having not been in the country for years, I’m looking for the ticket office because I’m really struggling to work out how the tickets work.

“I have an Oyster card which I haven’t used in about five years, I want to go out to Paddington, come back, do this, that and the other, and I still don’t know what to do.”

The desire for ticket offices is also shared by those living in London.

Sonay Mustafa, who lives in Oakwood with her sons Tarek and Taser, said the system can be difficult even for those who live in the city, and a ticket office at Oakwood would be useful.

She said: “It’s good they have staff at the stations, but if there was a ticket man, it would be easier for them to guide us to our destination.

“We’re from London, but we don’t know our way around on the trains as we are used to driving.

“The staff are helpful, but I have gone to stations where there is nobody there to help you, like Turkey Street.”

Taser added: “The other thing is jobs. It’s very important, I know they have got two staff there, but the more staff the better.”

Tarek said: “The machines are obviously a quicker way of travelling, but only if you know where you are going. If you don’t know, you’re not going anywhere, and by the time you’ve sorted that out you’ve missed your train and you’re late for work.”
