Edmonton MP Kate Osamor has taken on a new role in the shadow cabinet after several sackings and resignations over the weekend.

Ms Osamor has been named shadow international development secretary, which promotes the improvement of poorer countries as far as possible with British input, and challenges the government’s minister for the role, Justine Greening.

Elected as an MP in May 2015, she previously worked as shadow minister for women and equalities.

She is one of 10 MPs starting new roles Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet this morning, after numerous Labour MPs left their jobs on Saturday and Sunday.

After Hilary Benn was sacked by Mr Corbyn, a further 13 shadow secretaries and ministers have resigned and the Labour party leader faces a no confidence vote from his members, which will be voted on tomorrow.

Ms Osamor's appointment was largely welcomed on Twitter:

Ms Osamor, who was one of 36 Labour MPs to nominate Mr Corbyn for leader, has been contacted for comment.

She tweeted on Sunday: "Labour Party needs to unite behind our leader. We cannot descend into infighting at this critical stage. Lets bring the fight to the tories."
