The group representing the public’s views of the NHS is Haringey has said patients at North Middlesex A&E have been “badly let down”.

The Edmonton hospital has been hit by a series of crises, failing a surprise government inspection, and under threat of losing all 26 junior doctors which work there due to the poor working conditions.

Sharon Grant, chairman of Healthwatch Haringey, said the possibility of the North Middlesex A&E closing was a “huge worry” to patients across north London.

The only emergency department in Enfield after the controversial closure of Chase Farm’s casualty in 2012, North Mid is already suffering staffing problems with only 14 out of 28 consultant and middle-grade doctor jobs currently filled.

If it were to lose all junior doctors, it would be highly likely North Mid would be unable to keep its A&E open to the 500 patients who use it every day.

Ms Grant said: “Healthwatch Haringey is extremely concerned about the standard of care being offered at A&E at the North Middlesex Hospital, and it is clear that patients have been badly let down.

“For many Haringey patients it is their only local hospital and the threat of closure of A&E is a huge worry, especially where access to GPs has been poor in the surrounding area. It must not be allowed to happen.”

Ms Grant said Healthwatch Haringey, which monitors the senior staff who run NHS services at raises public queries and worries, will be present on an “oversight group”, which will specifically look at the progress of North Mid as it attempts to improve the situation.

She said: “We hope, and indeed expect, that urgent action is taken to secure the future of the hospital. It is clear that improvement on a wide range of issues is necessary to ensure that patients get the standard of treatment they are entitled to.”

Among the recent revelations, it was revealed four patients in the past two years have died following mistakes by doctors in the A&E department, and some of the 26 junior doctors have complained the working conditions are “unsafe.”
