The EU referendum has been hailed as the most important political event of the year.

Britons will go to the polls on June 23 to decide if the country should leave or remain in the EU – but many are undecided, and some are apathetic.

Chris Theodoulou, who runs Emma Claire hairdressers in Enfield Town, said he is yet to make his mind up, and believes most business owners are in the same boat.

He said: “The heart says go, the head says stay.

“We have to be very diplomatic as business owners, as if we broadcast our opinions too widely it could offend a lot of people, but on a personal level I am very confused about which way to vote.

“I can understand and even agree with both sides of the argument, but with a lack of trust among politicians, among those I know there is a clean 50/50 split on the issue.

“I am concerned about unemployment if we leave, and I am concerned about immigration if we stay, and frankly I don’t think there has been enough unbiased evidence available to make a proper decision either way.”

If Mr Theodoulou is unclear, others are of the view not enough people care about the outcome, according to one councillor.

Cllr Clive Carter, representative of Highgate ward, said he wished to keep his personal opinion private, but many of his constituents do not even have one.

He said: “Among members of the public I speak to, many feel it is just an example of the Westminster bubble, an issue that does not affect people’s lives.

“Looking at those involved, it appears so many of them are simply out to further their own careers, and people cannot care enough to get involved.

“There are many more issues people want discussed rather than the EU.”
