CHANGES to a much-debated branch of a £30million cycling scheme have been unveiled after public feedback.

Enfield Council held a consultation which finished in October on the A105 Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill section of Cycle Enfield.

Some of the major worries raised included getting off buses into a cycle lane, the lanes blocking access for disabled people, changes to the 125 bus route and reducing numbers of parking spaces.

As a result, 22 bus stops on the route will have “buffer strips” installed to protect people getting off public transport, although six will go unchanged.

Blue badge holders will be allowed to pick up and drop off anywhere on the route while the 125 bus will terminate on a different part of Station Road.

Lodge Drive car park in Palmers Green will also have a redesign to cater for spaces being lost along the high street and a zone giving free parking for 45 minutes will be created.

Cabinet member for environment Cllr Daniel Anderson said the plans are a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for Enfield, and could bring £42 million of investment to the borough.

He said: “The plans for Palmers Green will enable us to transform our high streets and town centres, promote healthier, more active travel and create safe and secure cycle routes.

“We’ve listened to what people have told us regarding our initial plans and made amendments.

“It’s an incredibly exciting time for Cycle Enfield as we are very close to starting work on the A105 scheme, which I am confident will enhance the area.

“We said we’d listen to people who got involved in the consultation and we’ve done just that having made change as a result of the feedback we received.

“Many residents recognise that this scheme is going to improve their quality of life and bring dramatic improvements to this part of the borough and I’m looking forward to seeing its implementation.

“As our population grows, future generations will thank us for the decisions we’re making today.”

The full changes can be viewed at Palmers Green Library on Thursday, May 19 from 3pm to 8pm, or by visiting the Cycle Enfield website.
