A schoolboy has said he is just pleased he made his mum happy after winning a public speaking competition.

Sean Sinanan, aged 15 from Enfield Grammar School, scooped top prize in the Enfield Regional Final of the “Speak Out” challenge, held at Broomfield School on Thursday, 28 January.

Sean impressed the judges with his winning speech entitled “Embrace your roots”, fighting off stiff competition from 19 other young speakers from schools in the Enfield area, at an event in front of prestigious guests including David Burrowes, MP for Enfield Southgate.

Sean said, “I feel amazing, everyone was great. At least I pleased my Mum!”

650 year 10 students aged 14 to 15 from 16 schools in Enfield took part in the competition. Sean won a £100 gift certificate for coming first and goes through to the city-wide grand final on Monday, 4 July at the Piccadilly Theatre.

Second place went to Casey Willett, 15 from Lea Valley High School with her speech “Disney messages” and third place went to Andre Ediagbonya-Davies, 15 from the Aylward School with his speech titled "Party Games."

The “Speak Out” challenge is run by the Jack Petchey Foundation, which gives grants to programs and projects that benefit young people aged 11 to 25.
