A steel pan band will bring the sounds of the Caribbean to London for a charity talent contest.

The Finchley Music Steel Band Orchestra will be competing in the North London’s Got Talent contest, presented by North London Hospice, on Saturday February 6 at 7pm.

The band is made up of pupils aged up to 18 years old from different schools across Finchley.

Abdul Williams, the teacher and conductor of the orchestra, can’t wait for people to hear the unique music of the steel pans.

He said: “The pans originate from the Caribbean, specifically Trinidad and Tobago.

“It is part of my history, as every single person in my family played the pans while I was growing up and so I have known this music all my life.

“The steel pans sounds like any other orchestra when they are put together. One pan sounds like a guitar and another sounds like a drum. It is magical.”

Mr Williams hopes to get this style of performing more known around London and believes children should learn to play the instruments as part of the school curriculum.

“I definitely want to get more people into it and welcome anyone to join my classes every Thursday evening and Saturday morning at Moss Hall School in Finchley.”

“The steel orchestra is all about the performance, as the sound is all you need.

“I have all my confidence in all my players for the talent show.”

Mr Williams would also like to thank BEAT in Barnet and all the parents and families involved in helping to put together a new sound that will help raise money for the North London Hospice.

Tickets for North London’s Got Talent cost £15
