Tributes have poured in for a community figurehead who died in a freak accident in Bulgaria.

Ian Johnson, 57, of Gentlemens Row, in Enfield, has been heralded for his hard work in the community and as a family man.

Mr Johnson because chairman of the Friends of Chase Green ground three years ago and been an integral part of the group.

“He was a very sociable man and liked to be involved in lots of things and was very sporty throughout his whole life” said his daughter, Laura Johnson.

“He knew everybody, he has always lived in Enfield and we have been passed condolences from so many people in the area.”

The 57-year-old was grew up in Enfield, attending Enfield Grammar School and has lived in the borough all his life.

He was a “keen sportsman” and represented Great Britain at duathlon in Portugal last year as well as climbing to the base camp at Mount Everest.

He played football at Winchmore Hill Cricket Club for many years, and was a member of Crews Hill Golf Club and Trent Park Running Club.

Mr Johnson was killed by a landslide in Sofia, on November 8 whilst visiting the country with friends.

Councillor Joanne Laban has paid tribute to the chairman following his sudden death.

She said: “Ian brought residents together and kept them engaged in volunteering to make Chase Green a safer and more wonderful place to enjoy.

“In August, the Friends Group held a community picnic for local people to raise awareness of the group’s work. Ian played a central part in the organisation of the event and on the day encouraging more people to be involved even though the weather was not good.

“Ian’s death is a loss to the local community and members of the Friends of Chase Green Group and I will remember him as someone who contributed to maintaining Chase Green as the great asset it is to our borough.”

Ms Johnson added: “He was a loving father and loving son. He will be missed by everyone.”

His funeral will take place on December 8, at St Andrews Church, in Enfield Town at 2pm.
