Tributes have been paid to a 22-year-old woman who plummeted to her death from a block of flats.

Jourdain John-Baptiste, fell from the fourth floor at Gainsborough House, in Ayley Croft, Enfield, in the early hours of Friday, August 21.

Murder detectives are now appealing for witnesses to the incident as one man, 24, has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and has been bailed to a date in late September.

A mother, who did not want to be named, described how she heard the events last Friday morning.

She said: “It was so scary. I was woken up by the sound of screaming from a couple of floors below me.

“The next thing I heard was someone fall to the ground, it is heart-breaking to see a young life lost in such a way. She was a beautiful girl and was always friendly to me and my family whenever I saw her.”

Justin Martins, a resident on the eighth floor, also paid tribute to the 22-year-old.

He said: “She was a lovely girl who had a lot going for her. There’s a community feel around here and most people know each other. She was always happy to talk anyone in the block.

“The thought of what happened still gives me the shivers, everyone round here is very quiet now.”

The 22-year-old worked at Liberty Gas, an independent heating company, and director David Blount, said: "It was with great sadness that we received news of the death of our colleague and friend Jourdain Jonh-Baptiste, who has worked in our Enfield office for the last four years as a senior administrator.

“Everyone who'd ever had the privilege of working with her found her a pleasure to work with. The company's heartfelt sympathy goes out to Jourdain's family and friends at this extremely distressing time.”

Ms John-Baptiste, believed to have lived alone, was taken by paramedics to an east London hospital but died later that day.

Detective Chief Inspector Neale Baldock, of the homicide and major crime command, said: "This is a sad case whereby a young woman's life has been tragically cut short. We are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to come forward as soon as possible.

“We are especially keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed what occurred on the victim's balcony prior to her fall to help us with our investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the incident room on 020 8721 4868, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
