Fires are more likely to occur in the summer or evenings, according to a new study released today.

The time and place Londoners are most likely to have a fire has been revealed with the publication of a new fire census, released by London Fire Brigade today.

According to the data, July is the busiest month, 7pm is the busiest hour and half of all household fires start in the kitchen.

The Fire Facts 1966 to 2014 report also shows that fires last year were half the level of the 1980s and 1990s.

In 2014, figures show that Barnet had 609 down from 1,295 in 2000, while Enfield dropped from 1,450 to 724.

The number of fires in Harrow fell from 681 to less than half at 331, while Haringey saw 560 fires last year in comparison to 1,360 in 2000.

Only one year, 1977, is not included in 'all fire' data due to a national fire service strike, resulting in data only being available until October.

London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: "We use this incredible wealth of data to target fire prevention and community safety work. The downward trend in fires is a huge credit to our staff and the public for acting on our life saving advice.

"The more information we can give about how, where and why fires happen will undoubtedly greater educate Londoners to the risks that still exist and hopefully save their lives.

"We are winning the battle but the war is far from over so we cannot became complacent."
