A judge has upheld a decision to revoke a supermarket of its alcohol licence.
Asya Wine Centre, in Hertford Road, Enfield, had its licence revoked by Enfield council on February 11 after an employee of the licence holder, Uygar Altun, sold non-duty-paid cigarettes to an Enfield council officer in August 2014.
Mr Altun was prosecuted in 2009 for selling counterfeit vodka which contained dangerous levels of methanol, while in 2012 three bottles of counterfeit Bollinger, 1,000 non-duty-paid cigarettes, 100 grammes of hand-rolling tobacco and 54 bottles of non-duty-paid spirits were discovered at the supermarket.
Councillor Daniel Anderson, Enfield council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “The sale of counterfeit or illicit tobacco and alcohol is a serious offence and we will not sit idly by and allow traders to engage in illegal activity. For as well as giving them an unfair advantage over legitimate businesses, they endanger the health of our residents.”
The case also saw the council granted costs of £4,928 by the district judge.
