From Highlands to Hiroshima, four pupils are getting ready to travel to Japan for the Scout Jamboree.

Thomas Quille and Lydia James, both 16, Ellie Way, 15, and 14-year-old Olivia Nice will be making the journey from Highlands School, in World’s End Lane, Enfield, as part of the 27 North London Scouts heading to the other side of the world.

This is the 23rd World Scout Jamboree and the four teenagers were picked from more than 200 applicants.

All come from different scout groups in Enfield and Southgate and the pupils have spent the past 18 months fundraising to support those from less developed economies who otherwise would not be able to travel to Japan.

Training for the event has included learning about Japanese etiquette, language and culture, as well as team building and preparing for sweltering temperatures of 40 degrees.

The World Scout Jamboree happens every four years, with over 30,000 scouts from all over the the world attending the 10-day camp in southern Japan, which features water sports, activities, cultural exchanges and music performances.

Whilst there, the scouts will take part in a youth festival to mark the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bomb at the Peace Park in Hiroshima.

Lydia James said: “We’ve been folding origami Peace Cranes to take to the Peace Park in Hiroshima. Peace Cranes commemorate a twelve-year-old Japanese girl who died of leukaemia in Hiroshima in 1954 and symbolise the hope for world peace”

Bruce Goddard, headteacher at Highlands School, added: “We are proud of the many achievements of our students both with Highlands and in their life away from school. Highlands students aim high in everything they do, and I am sure these four will be great ambassadors for Enfield in Japan."
