Helping a school from the brink of special measures to a good rating has been honoured with an outstanding award.

When Keith Carrano was asked to become a governor at Highlands School, in World’s End Lane, Enfield, 16 years ago he had no idea what road it would take him down.

Now the chair of governors at Garfield Primary School, the 56-year-old has scooped this year’s outstanding school governor award.

“I am pleased to be recognised for the work I have done, I am privileged and honoured by the award.”

Starting off when his son joined Highlands in its first batch of students, Mr Carrano was then asked in November 2013 to help Garfield school which had received requires improvement rating from Ofsted.

“Initially I wanted to be involved and give something back, I have been a youth worker in my younger years. One my children were at highlands schools, but I want to give back to the local community – I stayed because I loved it.” He said.

“You do have to commit quite a bit of time for evening meetings but it is about commitment.”

The governor was shortlisted with seven other hopefuls but emerged triumphant and labelled the achievement one of his best moments.

He said: “I am just very proud to have won the award, it is one of my best achievements, it shows the effort you are putting in has been recognised.”

Mr Carrano also issued a rallying cry to anyone considering becoming a governor.

He said: “It is rewarding and you are giving back to the community and what better than helping the young students in Enfield.”

Councillor Ayfer Orhan, Enfield council’s cabinet member for education, children’s services and protection said: “Well done Keith – this is a thoroughly well-deserved award. You are a great example of determination and a truly outstanding governor.

“We can thank all our school governors for the endless hours they spend ensuring that our schools meet exacting standards; that budgets are in order; that school premises are in good repair and that our children learn from inspired teachers in safe and secure surroundings.”
