Members of three churches attended the largest lobby of Parliament on climate change in history.

Worshippers from three Enfield parishes including Our Lady & St George, in London Road, St Monica’s, in Palmers Green, and Christ the King RC, in Cockfosters, travelled to Westminster to take part in the Speak Up For The Love Of... gathering.

The event came after people in every constituency in the region wrote to candidates in the General Election asking them to make the changing climate a priority.

Tony Sheen, a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St George, said: “Being part of the lobby with such a huge number of people at Parliament has been a fantastic experience. We’ve had an opportunity to tell our new MPs that we all care about something that’s affected by climate change and we want them to take action.

“It’s great that Pope Francis is speaking up for people who are affected by the way we treat our environment. We all need to think about the things we can change in our lives so that we can protect those things we love the most from climate change.”

The trip was supported by Catholic aid group CAFOD, which is backed by churches in the borough.

Last week, Pope Francis released an Encyclical – a letter to people worldwide – calling on everyone to take better care of the environment and the planet.
