Almost six councillors are missing from every full council meeting, figures have revealed.

Statistics seen by the Enfield Independent have revealed that councillors have been absent from the nine full council meetings 53 times since the local election last May.

Figures also showed that just 35 of 63 councillors, 55 per cent, attended all nine of the meetings between June 11, 2014, and April 1, 2015.

Of the 39 Labour councillors, 24 had a 100 per cent record with 11 of 22 Conservative councillors having the same.

Recording the lowest figures was Turkey Street ward Councillor Katherine Chibah, who is also standing as Labour’s candidate in Hertford and Stortford for the General Election, and has attended four of the nine full council meetings.

The figures also uncovered that former Labour Councillor Rohini Simbodyal attended 55 per cent of full council meetings as well as Haselbury ward Councillor Suna Hurman.

Speaking to the Enfield Independent, Leader of the Opposition Councillor Terry Neville has condemned the attendance record of Labour councillors.

He said: “It would appear that some on the Labour Group don’t realise being a Councillor and getting paid for it means you actually have to turn up for meetings and represent your residents’ concerns.

“I am sure on seeing this attendance record the Leader of the Labour Group will be questioning in particular the role Cllr Chibah plays in Enfield.

“I would also not be surprised if the residents of Turkey Street will ask what they are getting in return for the £10,600 salary Cllr Chibah collects, given an attendance rate of less than 50 per cent.

“Though given how few people apparently turn up for the Turkey Street Ward Forums I doubt many living in the area have a clue that any of their Labour Councillors are.”

Councillor Achilleas Georgiou of the Labour group rebuffed the figures and stated that councillors do more than “just attend full and extraordinary council meetings.”

He said: “Councillors attend more than just the Full and Extraordinary Council meetings which your figures are based upon. The figures you have do not give a full and accurate picture of attendance at meetings.

“There are other council meetings that councillors attend, such as Scrutiny Panels or Planning Committee.

“On top of these meetings, which are recorded, they should also be attending meetings with officers, particularly if they hold positions such as a chair of a panel or are members of the cabinet, residents' meetings and, very importantly, holding surgeries, something each and every Labour Councillor regularly holds - a duty some Tory Councillors appear not to do.”
