A man says shoddy resurfacing work has "ruined" his street.

But Enfield Borough Council has defended the way the work was done and said further repairs will be made in the next few weeks.

Michael Kelly, of Netherby Gardens, Oakwood, has criticised resurfacing carried out by council in the street last week.

The new surface has left the majority of the road without any kerb, something Mr Kelly says is “inexcusable.”

He told the Enfield Independent: “They have left this beautiful road in a mess, it has been ruined by poor management. To put the kerbs back in they are going to have to dig up some of the road again. God knows how much they have spent already.”

Mr Kelly, who has lived in the street for 16 years, says the surface itself is better but fears the lack of a kerb will result in water running onto people’s homes.

He said: “It could be a hazard for some of our drives because the water will not flow into the drains but onto the drives, because what is there to stop it?

"It’s very unprofessional and inexcusable. They have left it in a mess.”

An Enfield Council spokeswoman said: “In advance of the current resurfacing work at Netherby Gardens, Enfield’s engineers identified that the road comprises of rigid concrete carriageway slabs with a tarmac surface. The separate concrete slabs are at varying levels.

“This scheme therefore involves resurfacing the road to the correct levels, and then replacing sections of damaged kerbs with new kerbs at the correct level to suit the finished road surface. As there are shrub beds behind the existing kerbs, new kerbs can be easily installed afterwards.

“New kerbs will be installed in Netherby Gardens in the forthcoming weeks and residents will be notified in advance of these works.

“Any excess tarmac that has spilled onto the ground behind the existing kerbs will be removed as part of the kerb works.”
