The first trees in a new orchard have been planted on the site of a former playground.

Arnos Park, in Southgate, will now be home to a new orchard with the help of Helping Britain Blossom and Friends of Arnos Park and will consist of 14 fruit trees.

Orchard leader Alison Lister said: “The land has been unused for more than five years, encouraging litter and drug use. The new orchard will bring the community closer together and create a space that everyone can enjoy.

“It will be a great educational resource for the local schools and leave a legacy for future generations.

“We hope it will encourage older people in the community, and those with disabilities to volunteer, as there are a number of health benefits related to orcharding. We are very grateful to our wonderful group of volunteers, and Helping Britain Blossom for helping to make this happen.”

Merrin Layden, project manager for Helping Britain Blossom, added: “This is the first exciting step in turning this disused plot of land into a thriving community orchard. Orchards are a great way of bringing locals together.

“Everybody can play their part, however big or small, to create an area for all of the community to enjoy.

“It’s great to see a community of people working together to make the local area a better place to live, work and enjoy. We look forward to hearing about the positive impact it has on the area.”
