People living close to a former green space now fear that it could become a block of flats.

The area behind homes in Elizabeth Avenue and Bycullah Road, in Enfield was sold at the start of the year and a private company has since chopped down three trees and cleared the area.

Andrew Thorpe, who lives near the site, told the Enfield Independent no one in the area has been consulted on the developments and many fear it could be built on.

He said: “We have been left in the dark on this one. I have been told that the plot of land, which used to be hedges and trees, was sold for something close to half a million pounds.

“There are not many sites sold for that money that aren’t going to be used for housing, which would be terrible for the area. We used to have a lovely view from our garden but the thought of a block of flats is devastating.”

The site is still being cleared by developers and a planning application is yet to be put into place.

However, Mr Thorpe believes it is only a matter of time before an application is made and struggles to see how homes can be built on the site.

He said: “Wildlife has been destroyed there but it is an area which has no road leading up to it, just an alleyway, so I cannot see how it will appeal to anyone. I think if and when an application is put in, there will be strong opposition from many people in this area.

"The developers told us they would keep us in the loop yet have done nothing to satisfy that and seem to be doing what they like."

An Enfield Council spokesperson said: “Enfield Council has investigated the site and found no breach of planning control. In addition no planning application for a new development or alternative use has been received by the council.”
