A new games area is set to be installed in a Palmers Green park after it received a £45,000 grant.

Five-a-side football pitches and a basketball area will both be upgraded at Hazelwood Recreation Ground in Hedge Lane after it received the money from the London Marathon Charitable Trust.

Enfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for environment and community safety, Councillor Chris Bond, said: “It's vitally important that we instil in residents and especially young people the importance of keeping active and the council is playing its full role in this by providing a range of activities – both free and paid for – in the borough so people can get off the sofa and get moving.

“This funding will help build on improvement work taking place elsewhere in Enfield’s parks and I’m grateful for the London Marathon Charitable Trust’s support.

"I’d urge people to use this facility when it's upgraded, but also to pay a visit to some of the brilliant sports and leisure facilities in our other parks, such as one of the 13 state of the art and free outdoor gyms we’ve installed or the accessible cycling scheme in Bush Hill Park."

The money was presented to Enfield by the trust earlier this year as part of a funding round of £4.8 million nationwide.

Sarah Ridley, chief grants officer for the trust, said: “We know how challenging it is to get funding for facilities and our aim is to support organisations that have a good track record in encouraging more people to become physically active.”
