A teenager who showed “unbelievable strength” by overcoming cancer was invited to an evening in Downing Street to mingle with the stars.

Anne Ranasinghe, who lives in Grange Park, joined singer Peter Andre, The Saturdays’ Rochelle Humes and television presenter Kirstie Allsopp for an evening organised by Cancer Research UK.

The 14-year-old was just three when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

But after two years of treatment, she is now a happy and healthy teenager.

The event at Downing Street was as part Cancer Research UK’s new 'Kids and Teens' fundraising campaign.

Anne’s father Neil said: “Anne endured months of treatment with unbelievable strength and resilience. I couldn’t be prouder of her so I’m delighted that his courage has been honoured with such a fantastic day.

“Going to 10 Downing Street was an unforgettable experience for so many reasons, but most importantly because through supporting Cancer Research UK we can help to spare other children and families from this devastating disease in future.

“Success stories like Anne’s would not be possible without the charity’s life-saving work, which in turn relies on everyone who raises funds, so we hope people in London will really get behind this crucial campaign.”

Anne and 20 other people from the UK who have been diagnosed with cancer were also treated to a sight-seeing tour of London.

New figures show cancer deaths in children and young people have fallen by 58 per cent in the UK over the past 40 years.
